Logan City Council is getting ready to host the 2013 National Youth Week in April.

National Youth Week is the largest celebration of young people aged 12-25 years. It provides young people with the opportunity to express their ideas and views, act on issues that affect their lives and have a lot of fun. The theme for this year is Be Active. Be Happy. Be You.

The Logan City Council National Youth Week Grant Program is giving community organisations the opportunity to apply for funding to deliver activities during National Youth Week within Logan City Council boundaries.

Healthy Communities has released a discussion paper on Risk Reduction Strategies used by gay and other men who have sex with men, to guide HIV prevention efforts in Queensland.

The paper summarises the evidence of effectiveness for common Risk Reduction Strategies and outlines how Healthy Communities will approach working with gay men on this issue.

“Behavioural research shows that more gay men are sometimes having sex without condoms, but that a lot of the time they are taking other measures to reduce their risk” said Paul R Martin, Executive Director.

“Condoms remain the safest and easiest form of safe sex, especially for casual sex.  However in situations where men do not use condoms, there are still things they can do to reduce, but not eliminate risk.”

Risk reduction strategies are most effective if:

• men accurately know their current HIV status
  
• they can disclose their HIV status to partners, without stigma or discrimination
  
• men regularly test for and treat sexually transmitted infections
  
• partners openly and honestly negotiate the sex they want
  
• men have access to accurate, up-to-date and unbiased information to inform decision making
  

The discussion paper was developed in consultation with gay men and HIV service providers and uses current, reputable research.

The United Nations is in the process of preparing its 2013 World Youth Report (WYR) on Youth Migration and Development. The Report will offer a multidimensional account and/or perspective of the life experiences of young migrants and young people affected by migration. On Wednesday the 23rd January 2013 they will launch a 4 week online, interactive discussion platform aimed at bringing together young migrants and other young people (aged between 15-35) to share with them, and each other, their migration stories and experiences.

Who can participate?

For the purpose of this Report, UN DESA is inviting the participation of young people aged between 15 to 35 years - considering the UN Secretariat’s definition of youth as well as local cultural context of countries and regions across the world, the long term impact of migration on human development, and a range of life cycle issues. It is important to note that the proportion of young migrants’ peaks between the age range of 18 to 29. Additionally, representatives of youth-led organisations will be invited to share their perspectives and experiences on youth and migration.

Efforts will be made to target young people who have no or limited access to internet or online platforms to facilitate their participation in the consultative process. This will be done mainly through youth migrant networks and other relevant youth organisations.

The Australian Parliament is asking for submissions to their inquiry into the value of a justice reinvestment approach to criminal justice in Australia. 

Justice reinvestment diverts some of the money spent on locking people up and puts it into communities where there is a high concentration of young offenders, reinvesting the funds into education, programs and services that address the underlying causes of crime in these communities.

The inquiry will look at a number of issues, including:

• the economic and social costs of imprisonment,
• the over-representation of disadvantaged groups within Australian prisons, and
• the cost, availability and effectiveness of alternatives to imprisonment, including prevention, early intervention, diversionary and rehabilitation measures.

The Community Services & Health Industry Skills Council is reviewing both the qualifications and competency standards for a number of sectors, including children and youth services. AYAC has been a core part of the industry reference group to the review, and the subject matter expert groups.

The Young and Well CRC would like to invite Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander young people aged 12 to 25 to form a new advisory group to support Young and Well CRC projects seeking to understand and improve the mental health and wellbeing of young Indigenous Australians. 

The advisory group's role will be to ensure that Young and Well CRC research projects engage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people in meaningful ways by advising and collaborating with project teams. 

If you identify as being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and would like to  volunteer a few hours per month either online or on the phone, then I'd love to hear from you. If you know anyone else that might be interested, please forward this email on to them.
