Campaign for a Youth Disability Advocacy Queensland

Too often, young people with a disability don't get the same opportunities that other young people get. Sometimes they don't get the same access to education or they don't get offered jobs that they are perfectly well qualified for. As a community, it is our responsibility to make sure young people with a disability DO get the same opportunities and support that the rest of us take for granted.

A publicly funded youth disability advocacy service in Queensland is one way we can live up to our responsibility.

A youth disability advocacy service in Queensland would do three things to help the community fully meet its responsibility to young people:

  • It would help individual young people with a disability to access opportunities by making sure that the institutions they are involved with (schools, workplaces, recreational facilities etc) knew about their legal responsibilities and acted upon them.
  • It would support young people with a disability to advocate for themselves and their peers.
  • It would help to educate the community about its responsibilities toward young people with a disability (and thus reduce the need for young people to seek special assistance in the first place).
