Recent findings from the Writing Themselves In report, suggest that GLBT youth are in need of more support, information, guidance, love, social connectedness, and acceptance than they are currently getting. Be it at school, at home, or out and about, reports of GLBT youth being the victims of homophobic abuse are increasing. GLBT youth are up to three times more likely than their heterosexual friends to attempt suicide, and in rural and regional areas the attempted suicide rate for GLBT youth is six times the population average.
headspace want to offer a safe and accepting environment where GLBT youth can come together and share their experiences, hopes, fears, doubts and ideas, while having fun and meeting new people.
Each group meeting will have a topic (such as coming out, sexual health, or homophobia) and feature a guest speaker who will share their experiences and wisdom in relation to that topic. The group will then have a chance to discuss the topic in more detail, perhaps sharing moments and thoughts from their own life. Each meeting will end with an activity, which could be as simple as having a barbie, or bushwalking. The group will be encouraged to decide and plan the topic and activity, so anything is possible.
