Are you Getting Paid the Correct Wages?

Unite, the Union of Fast-Food and Retail workers in Victoria has accused the 7-Eleven franchise in that State of underpaying workers by up to 45% below the minimum wage and of forcing staff to work long hours without breaks (see the video below for details ).

Unite has called on the Workplace Ombudsman to investigate the employment practices at 7-Eleven. The Ombudsman has ordered 7-Eleven to produce all its employment records and is now conducting a full investigation.

If you are a young worker in Queensland and are concerned that you are being underpaid by your employer or not being appropriately supported there are several places you can go for help.

  • Your Union. To protect your rights at work the best thing you can do is join a union. Unions can help protect your from unfair treatment at work and improve your job security. For information about how to Join a Union, and which Union you should join visit http://www.unionsaustralia.com.au.

  • The Young Workers Advisory Service (YWAS). YWAS is a community organisation that provides information, advocacy, referrals and advice to young workers (under 25) in Queensland about employment/industrial relations concerns. Find them online at http://www.ywas.org or phone 1800 232 000.

  • The Queensland Working Womens Service (QWWS). QWWS is a community organisation that provides free and confidential information, advocacy, referrals and advice to women in Queensland about employment or industrial relations concerns.   • Queensland Workplace Rights Ombudsman. This Ombudsman provides information and advice to Queensland workers and employers about their workplace rights and obligations, and promotes fair and equitable practices in Queensland workplaces. For details visit http://www.workplacerights.qld.gov.au .
