The purpose of a Youth Disability Advocacy Service is to make sure that all young people, regardless of their different capabilities get opportunities in life to thrive and develop their own potentials. In Queensland many young people with disabilities are denied opportunities most of us take for granted - for example access to playground equipment. Here is one example of how an advocacy service in Queensland might help to rectify this situation.
A children's advocacy service in the United States was asked to assist a seven year old boy in a
wheelchair who was not able to access the playground equipment, or even get close to the playground to be with his friends.
The boys family was able to persuade the school to install a ramp so he could get to
the playground. However without adaptive equipment he had to sit and watch
his schoolmates play. The advocacy service became involved and was able to convince the school to
equip the playground with accessible, adaptive equipment so the boy
could enjoy the full benefit of play time with his friends.
If you think young people with disabilities in Queensland could use an advocacy service like this, then please help us spread the word. Register your details (confidentially) on our website and we'll be in touch with some simple but effective suggestions of steps you can take to help make an advocacy service for young people with disabilities a reality.
