In this letter to YANQ , the Department of Education, Training and the Arts provides a comprehensive a list of resources (copied below) on Education Queensland's (EQ) website, particularly related to the Education & Training Reforms for the Future (ETRF).
The Education and Training Reforms for the Future (ETRF) website is currently (Mar 2007) being updated, and includes information on education reformsfrom Prep to age 17. The Phase 5 Evaluation report, released in the second half of 2006, on the trials of the senior phase reforms is in the publications section. EQ will soon be releasing a study of the whole reforms project, called The Journey So Far, which will also be accessible through this site.
The Senior Phase section relates to young people who are now required tobe "learning or earning". In particular there are details on the support provided to young people who are disengaged from education or atrisk of becoming disengaged, through the Youth Support CoordinatorsInitiative and the Access to Pathways and Flexible Learning Services funding programs. This funding supports projects addressing the needs ofyoung people as identified by the District Youth Achievement Plan (DYAP) committees.
Given the issues raised by the Youth Consultative Network regarding the support provided for young people under the age of fifteen, you may wish to consult the Middle Phase of Learning section, which provides general information on the new approach to teaching and learning in the middlephase (Years 4 - 9). Current projects are detailed at http://www.learningplace.com.au/defaulteqa2.asp?orgid=41&suborgid=522.
The Education Queensland website contains information that may be of particular interest to you, such as relating to rural and remote students, and pregnant and parenting students:
In addition, our regions and districts each provide websites giving details of programs for young people in their area. These websites can be found by searching for regions and districts on our directory at http://education.qld.gov.au/schools/directory/.
Some programs run their own website, hosted at The Learning Place. You can visit this site to search for programs of interest. For example, there is the Ollie Up project (https://www.learningplace.com.au/deliver/content.asp?pid=17020), which seeks to use ICTs and excellence and innovation in learning and teaching to engage and broaden the horizons for middle schooling students who are at risk and/or in rural and remote locations. Flexible Learning in Schools (https://www.learningplace.com.au/defaulteqa2.asp?orgid=35&suborgid=235), supports flexible student-centred teaching and has specifically addressed the needs of disengaged students.
EQ's Annual Report , includes information on recent and upcoming research and evaluations in the Portfolio Policy and Research section.
There are details here of grants and allowances administered by Education Queensland: http://education.qld.gov.au/finance/grants/fund/garp/.
This page outlines financial assistance available to TAFE students and has links to jobs and careers information, diversity and equity matters and student support services. I also understand that the Director of each TAFE Institute has the authority to reduce or waive fees or to makeother arrangements depending on the individual level of financialhardship.
This page outlines various forms of employment, education and training assistance available from the Queensland Government as well as direct links to Commonwealth services. State programs are in fact now administered by the Department of Employment and Industrial Relations.Further contact details can be found on their website, listed below.
This page from the Department of Employment and Industrial Relations
provides information about assistance for people seeking employment, including special programs for young people at risk who are looking to enter the workforce, and community based assistance programs.
Finally, the apprenticeshipsinfo website (http://www.apprenticeshipsinfo.qld.gov.au/) provides easily accessible information on all types of apprenticeships and traineeships. We are in the process of providing additional web-based information specifically on school-based apprenticeships andtraineeships, which can broaden educational options for young people.
