Australia's Hidden Homeless
Thursday, 09 September 2010 10:58

A new report called "Australia's Hidden Homeless: Community-based approaches to asylum seeker homelessness" from the Hotham Mission Asylum Seeker Project investigates national and international models of housing provision for asylum seekers living in the community, with the aim of developing best practice housing reception standards for asylum seekers in Victoria. The research identified a critical lack of housing and support for asylum seekers, resulting in health and welfare disadvantage that can impede the process of resolving their immigration status. It also found that the complex immigration status of asylum seekers throughout the process of applying for protection, combined with having to compete with Australian residents and citizens for government-funded housing, can result in multiple barriers to safe and secure housing for asylum seekers in Australia. The report proposes a model for a medium-term solution for asylum seekers on bridging visas, with a focus on an integrated service delivery approach utilising existing expertise in the Australian context. The report can be downloaded from www.asp.hothammission.org.au
