A new report called "Australia's Hidden Homeless: Community-based approaches to asylum seeker homelessness" from the Hotham Mission
Asylum Seeker Project investigates national and international models
of housing provision for asylum seekers living in the community, with
the aim of developing best practice housing reception standards for
asylum seekers in Victoria. The research identified a critical lack
of housing and support for asylum seekers, resulting in health and
welfare disadvantage that can impede the process of resolving their
immigration status.
It also found that the complex immigration status
of asylum seekers throughout the process of applying for protection,
combined with having to compete with Australian residents and
citizens for government-funded housing, can result in multiple
barriers to safe and secure housing for asylum seekers in Australia.
The report proposes a model for a medium-term solution for asylum
seekers on bridging visas, with a focus on an integrated service
delivery approach utilising existing expertise in the Australian
