Addressing the Over-representation of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Childre in the Child Protection System

The Combined Voices Campaign aims to address the chronic over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Families in Queensland's Child Protection System.

The campaign has recently released a new report, Addressing the Over-Representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Families in Queensland's Child Protection System (PDF).

The report points out that:

  • In Queensland 1 out of every 4.5 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children have had some form of contact with the child protection system.
  • June 2008 stats reveal only 56.7% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children in care were placed with Indigenous carers.
  • Only 12% of these children had phone contact with an immediate family member.
