SO: Spaced Out, is a board game that aims to raise
awareness about the link between substance use and mental health
problems. The game was designed predominantly as a tool for workers supporting young people who are dealing with substance abuse. Its goal is to convey knowledge and generate discussion so young people can make informed
choices about substance use.
Utilising adolescent character storylines, players travel the board
collecting clues about Factors relating to family, social and
psychological circumstances. Gathering and analysing clues, the winner
is the first to reach the Solution Space to suggest what’s happened to
the character in one of the four individual stories. Players are
rewarded with advancement through the game when they land on Fact Cards
to learn more about substance use and mental health.
A facilitator-led discussion about the dual diagnosis issues raised in
the individual storylines concludes the educational aspect of the game.
SO: Spaced Out engages with its target audience in a fun and entertaining way to focus on risks between substance use and mental health.
Cost: The game can be purchased for $65.00 + GST and postage (approx. $12.00).
